In May, county officials unveiled their plans to establish a new income surtax on high-income households, a first-of-its-kind move in NYS.

Ulster Strong immediately called for a pause in order to better understand the need for a new tax and to ensure that all other alternatives have been assessed.

We developed a survey for businesses and community members to assess their position on the proposal. Out of 97 total responses, 64 were opposed to the new tax, with only 26 in favor and 7 undecided. 63 of the 97 respondents agreed with Ulster Strong’s “pause and assess” position.

As a result, Ulster Strong has published an OpEd in the Daily Freeman urging the Legislature and the County Executive to pause the proposal until final financial reports are available, businesses have been engaged, and a consensus-based solution has been developed.
